Does spending a year in Norway sound tempting? Here is a checklist of how you can become a student at one of the 80 Norwegian folkehøgskole.

📅 Step 1: Before You Apply

Do your research

  • Visit folkehogskole.no/en and browse schools and programs.

  • Think about what kind of year you want:

  • Folkehøgskole is not free, because you live at the school and meals and study trips are included. The different schools and programs have different prices.

Tip: Most schools have photo galleries and videos that give you a real feel for student life—don’t skip those!

📤 Step 2: Apply

  • Fill out the school’s application form online.

  • You can apply to several schools if you wish.

  • Submit your application as soon as possible.

Admissions open November 15 each year, and schools use rolling admission. That means they accept students until the class is full or school starts.

💌 Step 3: Admission & Registration Fee

  • Expect a response from the school within a few weeks after November 15.

  • If accepted, you’ll receive an offer of admission.

  • Confirm your spot and pay the registration fee (around NOK 2,500).

✈️ Step 4a: If You’re From Outside the EU/EEA or UK

(Skip this if you’re from the EU, EEA, or the UK)

  • Apply for a study permit (residence permit for studies) from UDI.

  • The process can take several months, so start early!

  • You’ll need to document that you have a guarantee amount of NOK 130,745 in a Norwegian bank account to show you can support yourself.

  • Wait for your permit approval before traveling to Norway.

🛳️ Step 4b: If You’re From the UK

(Skip this if you’re from the EU or EEA)

  • You don’t have to apply for a study permit.

  • You do need to document that you have a guarantee amount of NOK 130,745 in a Norwegian bank account to show you can support yourself.

🚄 Step 4c: If You’re From EU or EEA, except the Nordic countries

(Skip this if you’re from one of the Nordic countries)

  • You don’t have to apply for a study permit.

  • You also don’t need to document that you have a guarantee amount of money.

  • When you arrive at the folkehøgskole in Norway, you’ll need to tell the local police that you’re living in Norway. Your folkehøgskole will help you with that.

🧳 Step 6: Get Ready for Norway

  • Arrange travel to the school.

  • Pack suitable clothing — Norwegian weather can vary from warm summers to snowy winters!

  • The school will send you a packing list, arrival info, and practical details.

💡 Extra Tips

  • Apply early if you need a visa or study permit.

  • Stay in touch with the school. They are used to helping international students.

  • Follow the school’s social media accounts to get a glimpse of life on campus.
